Common Seller Questions

We've heard every concern. Here's how we handle the most common ones.

What if I have items of very different value?
No problem — we list items at every price point. A $10,000 piece of jewelry gets the same attention as a $20 kitchen item. Competitive bidding determines the final value for each.
What items don't you accept?
We don't accept hazardous materials, certain firearms without proper licensing, or perishable goods. We'll walk you through any restrictions during your consultation.
How long does the process take?
Typically 2–4 weeks from consultation to auction close, depending on estate size. Rush timelines can sometimes be accommodated — ask us.
Do items have a minimum price?
Most items have a $1 starting bid with no reserve, which drives competitive interest. We discuss reserve pricing on a case-by-case basis for high-value items.
What happens to items that don't sell?
Unsold items can be donated, consigned to future sales, or removed by the seller. We'll discuss your preference upfront so you have a plan before auction day.

Real Estate Auctions

10%

Reduced premium on real property sales — a significant advantage versus traditional auction house fees.

Estate Sale Knowledge Center

Practical guides for sellers planning an estate sale and buyers hunting for value at auction.

Estate Sale Planning Guide

Whether you're managing a loved one's estate or clearing out decades of possessions, here's what to know before you start.

Step 1: Take Stock

Before contacting any company, do a rough walkthrough of the property. Note the major categories of items — furniture, jewelry, tools, collectibles. This helps us give you an accurate timeline and process recommendation. You don't need to make a formal inventory — just a general sense of volume and categories.

Step 2: Don't Throw Anything Away

This is the single most common mistake families make before an estate sale. Items that seem worthless — costume jewelry, old tools, vintage clothing, kitchen appliances — can generate significant bidding competition. Wait until after the auction to decide what goes to donation or disposal.

Step 3: Locate Important Documents

Certificates of authenticity, receipts, appraisals, provenance documentation, and ownership records dramatically increase the value of jewelry, art, antiques, and firearms. Gather these if possible before our consultation — they directly impact final bids.

Step 4: Understand the Timeline

A typical eBIDLOCAL auction takes 2–4 weeks from consultation to pickup completion. Plan your property transition timeline accordingly. Rush timelines can sometimes be accommodated — just let us know your constraints early.

Buyer's Guide to Estate Auctions

New to estate auction bidding? Here's how experienced buyers approach each sale.

Set a Budget Per Item

Before the auction opens, browse the catalog and decide the maximum you'd pay for each item you want. Enter that as your Max Bid — this removes emotion from the process and lets the system protect your price automatically.

Always Attend Preview

Photos are good, but photos can't show you the condition of the bottom of a drawer, a hairline crack on a ceramic, or the actual scale of a piece of furniture. All items are sold as-is — inspect before you commit.

Know Your Shipping Costs First

If you're bidding from outside the Richmond area or need items shipped, contact a shipper before bidding. Shipping costs for large furniture or fragile items can be significant. Factor that into your Max Bid budget.

Watch Closing Day Closely

Bidding typically heats up in the final hours and minutes of each auction. If you're watching items close, be logged in so you see the live countdown. Set calendar reminders for closing times on items you care about.

What Makes Estate Items Valuable at Auction?

💡 Key Value Drivers

  • Provenance and documentation — verified ownership history dramatically increases collector confidence and bids.
  • Maker's marks and signatures — pottery, silver, paintings with identifiable makers command premium prices.
  • Rarity and completeness — full sets of china, complete collections, or production-limited items bid higher than partials.
  • Original condition — items in unrestored original condition are often preferred by serious collectors over refinished pieces.
  • Name recognition — items from notable families, brands, or regions attract specialized collector groups.
  • Market timing — certain categories (vintage toys, mid-century furniture, vinyl records) go through strong demand cycles.
